John Wesley Powell was an extraordinary man. A geologist, explorer of the American West, and Civil War Union soldier (who lost his right arm in the war), Powell is best known for his dangerous expeditions down the Green and Colorado Rivers. More importantly, he is credited with leading the first group of European American men down the Colorado River in 1871, through the present day Grand Canyon.
Being part of this adventurous expedition must have been marvelous. Although a treacherous and dangerous journey, navigating through uncharted territory and seeing this magnificent natural landscape must have changed Powell forever.
The following are some of his most famous quotes on the wondrous Grand Canyon with some of my photos for you to enjoy.
